Toronto Staycation: Brunch + Kensington Market

Last week, my university had our reading week. While a lot of my friends were jetting off to really cool places, I was stuck in Toronto working. Usually, this would make me very sad, but we had such amazing weather this past week that I couldn’t complain. I made the most of my week free of classes , and did what Torontonians do best – brunch! I went to 4 different brunch places over the course of the week. It was totally unplanned, but I’m quite pleased with my decisions. In addition to all the brunching, I spent a lot of my time in Kensington market (pictures after the brunch pics). I never get tired of looking at all the cool knick knacks in the little shops, and just sitting in pretty coffee shops. Spring in February

The past few days have felt just like spring in Toronto, and I just had to take advantage of the sunshine. Los Angeles: Where I’d Rather Be (Always)

I was going through my phone, deleting photos, when I stumbled upon my pictures from LA. It made me realize two things. 1. I would much rather be in LA right now. And 2. Don’t I always want to be in LA? Looking through the photos made me miss my little vacation. I couldn’t help but reminisce about the wonderful week I had, so naturally, I decided to make this post.

November had suddenly snuck up on me. The air was getting colder, and the assignments were piling up. It was time for a much needed vacation, a quick break from the mundane cyclical patterns of everyday life. Enter Los Angeles. I had spent 6 days in Los Angeles visiting family, and ultimately just relaxing. I hadn’t been to LA in almost 4 years, and I ended up with a new appreciation for the city.

Dark Vibes, Sunny Day

The weather in Toronto has been beautiful lately. It’s still a bit nippy out, but spring is certainly in the air! To celebrate the beautiful weather, I packed up my parka, and busted out my leather jacket. Words cannot express how excited I am to be able to wear clothes without hiding it under a massive coat. I took advantage of the warmer weather and sunshine, and  roamed around Toronto. I was feeling edgy (probably because I was listening to Arctic Monkeys this morning), so I went with an all black outfit with a pop of red. Here is my weekend look along with outfit details.

Smoothie Bowl: Because it’s unacceptable to eat ice-cream for breakfast.

I have given into the smoothie bowl craze. I am completely obsessed with these bowls of sweet fruity goodness. I think I’ve had one for breakfast everyday this week. I feel as if I’m eating soft serve ice cream for breakfast, but I’m not, and it’s healthy. They’re also insanely easy to prepare, and you can make them pretty. I prefer the berry flavours with a Greek yogurt base (makes it a thicker consistency like ice cream). I like to top it off with sliced bananas, almond slivers, and a blend of chia, hemp, and flax seeds. Seriously, so good! Don’t fight it, just give into the trend!

Kangaroo Pouches and Turtlenecks

My favourite winter outfit is definitely overalls and a turtleneck. It’s warm, versatile, and convenient. Overalls are always my go to because of the giant front pocket most of them have. It’s very handy for storing things such as your phone, glasses, or snacks. It reminds me of a kangaroo pouch, except without the baby kangaroos. It’s such an easy outfit to put together, but it always looks so effortlessly cool.

A Cozy Sunday for the Jaded

Sometimes, life gets to be a little too much, but it’s hard to take that day off when you know you need to get things done. I was having a conversation with a coworker the other day about how exhausting it is trying to balance everything from school to work to a social life. It’s so easy to forget to make time for yourself, but often times that’s all you really need. That alone time to recharge and rejuvenate is so crucial to your well being, and can make all the difference in the way you approach all your tasks.

I decided to take Sunday off, and I mean this in the truest possible sense of the phrase. I had originally planned to study all day, but I figured my brain needed a break. I did nothing work or school related. Instead, I did 3 things this Sunday that I hadn’t done in a long time.

Music To Keep You Focused

Midterm season is in full swing, and I can’t get myself to study. I do this thing where I go to the library, and I’ll sit there and stare at the same slide of a lecture powerpoint until I fall asleep. Other times, I’ll end up on Facebook watching cute dog videos, or on Instagram stalking the HotGuysReading hashtag. It’s a tough student life. In the midst of my non-studying, I have curated a playlist, so that you won’t have to suffer the same fate as me. This playlist will keep you awake (most of the songs are upbeat), without distracting you from reading (most of the songs are lyric free). Happy studying, and may the gods of academia look down upon you with graciousness and favour!

Vegan Bowl: To Make It Seem Like You’ve Got Your Sh*t Together

My favourite meal these days have been vegan bowls because they’re so easy to prepare and very portable. As a student, I’m always on the go, and I often find it hard to find nutritious food options close to my classes. Vegan bowls are perfect for those days that I just don’t seem to have enough time to go home and cook myself an intricate meal. I often just throw all the ingredients onto a grill or steamer, and into a tupperware bowl (glass or ceramic, of course). Voila! All my lunch problems have been solved! My favourite vegan bowl combo at the moment is whole wheat pasta, sweet potato, sundried tomato, tofu, zucchini, and parsley. I start by cooking my whole wheat spaghetti noodles. Then I grill the sweet potato, zucchini, and tofu. I throw all the ingredients into a bowl, and generously drizzle olive oil and lemon on top. It takes about 15 minutes altogether!
